| Description |
English: The Firth of Forth separating the Scottish areas of Fife and Lothian has always been a major obstacle to communication between the capital, Edinburgh, and the Highlands and North East of Scotland.
From the 11th century crossed by various ferries, it was not until 1890 that the incredible, beautiful and elegant Forth Rail Bridge opened for traffic. Road transport had to wait until 1964, when the Forth Road Bridge opened - at the time the longest suspension bridge outside the USA. Serious structural problems with the FRB discovered around 2008 lead to the commissioning of a new bridge for road traffic - The Queensferry Crossing - which was opened in 2017. The old FRB is retained for public service vehicles and pedestrians/horswes.cyclists only. Both the FRB and the Queensferry Crossing were opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II. |
