O Forte de São Julião da Barra é um monumento arquitetónico militar e património nacional de importância histórica, cuja construção teve início na segunda metade do século XVI, durante o reinado de D. João III, para reforço do sistema defensivo da Barra do Rio Tejo, tendo sido considerado o «Escudo do Reino». Para além da missão militar de defesa, funcionou, a partir de 1802, como colégio de educação, destinado aos filhos dos militares do Regimento de Artilharia da Corte, ali instalado – a génese do Colégio Militar. Prisão durante bastante tempo, foi o cárcere de muitos presos, destacando-se o nome do General Gomes Freire de Andrade. No início do século XX ainda mantinha uma linha férrea que passava pela ponte sobre o fosso e que servia para o transporte das pesadas munições usadas nas então novas bocas-de-fogo de costa. Desativado da sua função defensiva em 1947, passou a ser utilizado, a partir de 1951, para atos de representação dos organismos integrados na Defesa Nacional.
