Foi edificada em 1648 como a mais importante fortificação da baía de Sesimbra. No século XVIII acolheu o governo militar da região e a residência de Verão dos infantes reais. Sem função militar, em 1879 foi cedida à Guarda Fiscal e em 1886 à Alfândega. A fortificação apresenta planta poligonal, adossando-se aos vértices do corpo central dois baluartes triangulares a Norte e dois trapezoidais a Sul. Este corpo alberga a casa do governador e as dependências da guarnição, a cisterna, o paiol e a Capela.
