We had no definite destination, no definite plans, but were ready to take whatever came our way.

Grub was no problem because duck were plentiful and we could shoot as many as we needed.

Fort Vermilion was our first stop, but it happened that there was a fresh wind in our favour, so, having purchased a few necessities from W. Clark, the Hudson's Bay Factor, we returned to the Canoe as quickly as possible – hoisted the sail for the first time since we started, and pushed off again.

I would like to mention before we leave Fort Vermilion, that, at this point, practically on the 56 th meridian the Dominion Government has established an Experimental Farm – the most Northerly in Canada.
