Description The main gate to the fort was on the south side immediately facing the Columbia River from whence all things came: local American Indians, American colonists, missionaries, botanists, traders, military expeditions, etc. The gate was close to the Indian Trading Shop (on the left) which allowed trading Indians (or others with doctoring to be done) to do their business without having to enter too far into the fort's space. (This was dignified compared to the way the forts in the country were operated! There, Indians - except the occasional chief - were barred from the fort grounds and had to conduct business from a window through the fort walls!) The gate today would open on the Pearson Air Field, part of the Vancouver National Historic Reserve, where planes still arrive and depart on a strip between the fort and a highway, train track and, finally, the Columbia River. The gate is usually kept closed, except for special occasions. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Washington
