Description

MARINA, Calif. -- The first Run for the Fallen Fort Ord 10K running event was held at Fort Ord Dunes State Park on Nov. 2. The race was attended by an estimated 500 runners and spectators with proceeds going to local organizations dedicated to honoring the memory of local veterans or assisting men and women returning from war. The Joint Service Honorary Color Guard from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center participated in the opening ceremonies and about 50 student volunteers from the school were on hand to assist in making sure the event went smoothly. Many members of the local military community participated in the run, including DLIFLC Commandant Col. Danial Pick and Presidio of Monterey Garrison Commander Col. Paul Fellinger. The event was organized in large part by Margot Stengel, a Monterey resident and Gold Star mother, whose her son died in Afghanistan, December 2010.
