Description The inventor Thomas Edison (1847-1831) bought a large piece of land on the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers, Florida in 1885, and built a winter home on it. He spent most winters in Florida for the rest of his life. He built a laboratory on the property. One of the major objectives was creating synthetic rubber. He experimented with many tropical plants for this purpose. Edison created a tropical garden around the house.
