Fort Monroe National Monument is located in Virginia and was added to the Network in 2019. This site preserves and interprets a wide array of Reconstruction era stories, including some of the earliest efforts to transition from slavery to freedom, a large Freedman community, and the imprisonment of Jefferson Davis during the early years of Reconstruction.
