Description

FORT MONROE, Va. -- Dr. Jarrod Burks, a consultant for the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, or ERDC-CERL, compares soil to a Munsell Soil Color Chart during an archaeological dig here June 9. By recording detailed notes about the dig, scientists can share and recreate the conditions encountered during their attempt to determine the existence, location and condition of a Civil War-era Contraband or Freedman cemetery that's believed by many to be located on Fort Monroe.
