Summary
[edit]DescriptionFort Kearney Crossing 1848 - 1871 - Platte River Marker..jpg |
English: Fort Kearney Crossing 1848 - 1871. Oregon Trail Platte River Marker. My marker was placed on the south bank of the Platte River in Buffalo County on the Oregon Trail near Fort Kearney on August 25th 1910 in a ceremony by the Fort Kearney National Park Association. This marker marked the spot where some of those traveling the Oregon Trail had crossed the river on one of the few safe trails across the Platte River. This group of (Grand Army of the Republic) Civil War vets hoped to have Fort Kearney declared a National Park. They had intended to place a large granite marker but due to a lack of funds this temporary marker was placed instead. The effort in Washington DC failed and the group disbanded later in 1910. This wooden marker was found in a trash heap in an alley in Kearney Ne in the early 1950's broken in half vertically. The bullet ridden marker is 1 1/2 inches thick and 6 ft tall. |
