From 1875 onwards, raids on farms around Lüneburg and killings of baptized Zulus started to escalate. Therefore the German settlers of Lüneburg built a Laager around their church, surrounded by a moat, which was filled with water from a furrow. When threatened, the settlers stayed in this Laager. During the Anglo-Zulu war in 1879, 120 grown-ups and children found shelter there for 9 months. Assistance from Pretoria, the capital of the Z.A.R., had been declined, because of their own problems. In 1877 the Z.A.R. (Transvaal) was annexed by British forces. The Germans then asked for support from the English authorities. They sent Colonel Wood with the 90th regiment for protection. He then erected Fort Clery in 1878. Although only 9 km from the Ntombe massacre site, the fort was never used in battle, but served i.a. as an ammunition depot.
