Summary
[edit]DescriptionFort Augustus 446 (48099574097).jpg |
Fort Augustus and Loch Ness. The middle pier of the viaduct that was built to take the Invergarry & Fort Augustus Railway across the River Oich to the railway pier, to take passengers (mainly) and goods onto boats on Loch Ness. This was one of the most hopelessly uneconomic railways ever built in Britain, built by an independent company, although both the North British Railway and the Highland Railway had designs on a railway through the Great Glen, thus linking Inverness to Fort William. The one mile from Fort Augustus town station over this viaduct to the pier absorbed about a third of the entire cost of the line, but this section only lasted just over three years. Oddly it was the Inverness based Highland Railway that started services on 22 July 1903, oddly because the only physical connection the line had was with the North British Railway at Spean Bridge, ten miles from Fort William. After just five years the HR ceded control to the NBR, who themselves gave up the struggle in October 1911. When public financial support became available, trains restarted on 1 August 1913, passenger services running for twenty years before withdrawal on 1 December 1933. From then a weekly coal train sufficed until 31 December 1946, although it became a daily working during World War II. |
