| Description |
English: Former canal stop lock by Gas Street Basin, Birmingham The stretch of canal beyond this stop lock leads to the junction of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal and the older Birmingham Canal, beyond the arch of Broad Street Tunnel. When the former canal opened it was not allowed to connect with the latter, so goods had to be carried from boat to boat across solid land barrier, known as the Worcester Bar, which separated the canals. An Act of Parliament in 1815 resulted in a stop lock (the narrow section shown here) to be constructed linking the two canals. Gas Street Basin is off camera to the right. |
