Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer Wilson National Center for Parenting and Character Education, Buffalo, New York - 20210312.jpg |
English: As seen in March 2021. Built in 2001, the building at 1000 Main Street in Buffalo, New York is an example of Postmodern architecture whose requisite debt to Classicism comes in a form that is, to an unusual and remarkable degree, true to its forbears, with a minimum of stylization. The Doric pillars that support each of the building's frontal pediments are not significantly different from what you'd find on a building erected 100 years prior, and the pediments themselves, though unadorned with decorative elements, are scarcely less authentic. Nonetheless, ultimately the geometric tracery in the main pediment and in the lunule-shaped dormer windows place the building firmly within Postmodernism rather than New Classicism. Operated for the first nineteen years of its existence by EPIC (Every Person Influences Children), the Wilson National Center for years housed parenting education programs, professional development initiatives, and other youth services aimed at "helping children make responsible decisions, understand and respect authority, develop positive self-esteem, plan for the future, and succeed in life". They are now located at the Western New York Human Services Collaborative at 1021 Broadway. The building was purchased in 2021 by the Salvation Army, whose local headquarters are next door; their plans for it were unclear at the time this photo was taken. Other tenants include the Precious Angels daycare center and a satellite location of BestSelf Behavioral Health. |
