Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in September 2021. Despite the loss of much of its original detailing (namely the round-arched dormer windows facing the façade, the chimneys and the Eastlake-style porch on the west side elevation), the three-story brick building at 319 Connecticut Street (corner Plymouth Avenue), in the business district of the Lower West Side of Buffalo, New York, remains a fairly good representative example of the simplified Second Empire aesthetic that was popularly used in the era for commercial and mixed-use buildings such as this. Round-arched windows are the rule of thumb, subtle Classical detailing is found on the cast-iron storefront in the form of stylized Doric pilaster strips intercalated between the windows, and of course, the requisite mansard roof remains loudly and proudly present despite the aforementioned removal of the dormers. The building was constructed in 1876 to house the residence and shop of retail druggist William H. Perkins (1836-1881), but he only lasted a year in business at the location. Its second owner, as well as almost all the subsequent ones, have been grocers or confectioners; the longest-tenured shopkeeper in those early days was John Hauser, who operated his grocery store there from 1881 through 1892. The building is now vacant and undergoing restoration.
