Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The former Schreiber Brewing Company building at 662 Fillmore Avenue, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. Here we see architect Władysław Zawadzki's signature Renaissance-based but eclectic stylistic tendencies in full effect; salient features thereof include a prominent corbel table underneath the roofline and a Classically-inspired pediment above the entrance flanked by a pair of finials that look rather like peacocks with outstretched wings. The southern portion of the building is a 1948 addition and is more Neoclassical in appearance. Anthony Schreiber founded his eponymous brewery in 1899; his flagship beer was a high-quality aged lager named Manru, after an opera by composer-turned-Polish president Ignacy Jan Paderewski. By 1909, the date of the construction of the building seen here, the brewery was the largest Polish-owned business in Buffalo. The business survived Prohibition by temporarily switching to the production of non-alcoholic beverages (Manru became a coffee brand); it went out of business in 1951 and the building is now vacant.
