Summary

[edit]
Description

One of two statues of children, in the entrance archway of the former School Board Offices, Calverley Street, Leeds. This Grade II* listed building was designed by George Corson, and built 1878-84, although the date 1880 is carved on it, and it was opened for use in 1881.

Matthew Taylor created the two sculptures of a schoolboy and schoolgirl in the entrance archway, and Benjamin Payler executed all the other stone carving. The statues were once known as "Frank and Molly," and the child models both lived in Woodhouse, Leeds. The boy, Francis Bertram Taylor (1868-1950) was the son of the sculptor. He became an artist-sculptor and served in WWI. The girl, Mary Isabel Ingleby (1868-1925), married a chemist who had a shop locally.
