Summary

[edit]
Description

Designed and built in 1934 by Baltimore architects Smith and May (also designed the Bank of America building in 1929), Read's Drug store is located the historic "heart of downtown." In January 1955, after successful campaigns to desegregate the Kresge's and Grant's store chains, the Baltimore chapter of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) joined with Morgan State College students to stage sit-in protests leasing to desegregation of the whole Read's chain.

Existing proposals for the redevelopment of the Superblock require the demolition of this building. Visit the Baltimore Heritage website for more information on the West Side and the redevelopment of the Superblock. Connect with Baltimore Heritage on Facebook for more updates on Read's Drug Store and the future of the historic West Side.
