Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer RAF Windrush watchtower and pillbox - geograph.org.uk - 750455.jpg |
English: Former RAF Windrush watchtower & pillbox View looks north-westwards from the airfield perimeter track towards the watchtower (or in American terminology the control tower) of what was between early Summer 1940 and 12th July 1945 RAF Windrush. The watchtower is officially known as a "13726/41 tower". On the left is a blister hangar - one of nine originally built at this training airfield. The pillbox is described in 'Britain's Military Airfields 1939-45' by DJ Smith as "a substantial strongpoint near the watch office". It was not built to a standard design. Like many others it is hexagonal in shape with embrasures in each face but the internal anti-ricochet wall supported a light anti-aircraft machine gun position on the roof. A modern barn is in the background. |
