Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Former Post Office, Chetwynd House, Stafford, near to Stafford, Staffordshire, Great Britain.

Chetwynd House became Stafford's General Post Office in 1914. Despite this, this handsome red-brick house built in 1746 by William Chetwynd of Brocton still maintains many of its original features including some fine oak panelling.
It was sold in the 1780s to William Horton, a local shoe manufacturer, and whilst he lived there his friend Richard Brinsley Sheridan (playwright, and M.P. for Stafford, 1780 - 1807) was a regular visitor, staying there whilst on political business in the Borough.
The Post Office closed this building in 2008, moving no more than 1/4 mile to occupy part of the first floor of WH Smith. Progress?

It has been suggested that Chetwynd House should become a museum.
