Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in May 2020: the former People's Bank of Buffalo branch at 904 Broadway (corner Strauss Street). Built in 1925, the Neoclassical design of the building - a product of the prolific local firm of Esenwein & Johnson - sports a definite Adamesque influence that comes out most prominently in the ornate detailing on the façade: stylized Corinthian capitals crowning brick pilaster strips, circular reliefs adorning the entablature which in turn is topped by a stone cornice, and large arcaded windows with keystone voussoirs. The People's Bank of Buffalo was acquired by the Manufacturers & Traders Trust Company only two years after this building's construction, but they declined to continue operating the Broadway branch; in later years, it served as the headquarters of Lincoln National Bank (1928-1973), then a branch of Chase Manhattan Bank (through 1999), and then briefly became an M&T branch before its closure in 2000. It's now a barber shop.
