Summary

Description

The former Lock House, Beverley Beck, c.1890. Beverley Beck runs from Grovehill Lock on the River Hull at Beverley west for about 8 miles into the town. It has linked Beverley to the Humber and the sea since medieval times. Until 1802, the beck was tidal, but the Beverley and Barmston drain needed to pass under it. The lock was constructed to maintain water levels over its tunnel. The canal fell into decline when modern barges grew too big to enter the waterway, and commercial use ended in 1987. In recent years, money was invested in restoring and dredging the Beck, and it is now home to a number of leisure craft, as well as the historic barge ‘Syntan,’ formerly owned and operated by Hodgson’s Tannery.
