Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in July 2020: the building at 1192 Main Street in Buffalo, New York, at the south corner of Barker Street, is a classic example of the so-called "Stripped Classical" style popular at the time of its construction, sporting a decor scheme that's streamlined but still handsome: a pair of two-story-tall engaged Tuscan columns flank the entrance and extend upward to an architrave decorated in a geometric pattern, above which lie in turn a bracketed cornice and a parapet at the roofline decorated in a balustrade motif. Like many of its contemporaries along the stretch of Main Street north of downtown, 1192 Main's history is intimately tied with that of the early automobile retail industry in Buffalo: erected in 1926, the building originally functioned as home to the John J. Gibson Company, dealers initially in Hupmobile cars, later in Plymouths and DeSotos. After World War II, McGowan Motors briefly occupied the building before giving way to LaMont-Wray Motors, which lasted from 1950 at least through 1958; both of the aforementioned were Chrysler dealers. The building is now used as a warehouse connected to the Delta Sonic car wash and auto garage located across Barker Street and partially visible at far right.
