Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer J.W. Ruger & Co., Deck Bros. Brass Foundry - Buffalo, New York - 20221230.jpg |
English: As seen in December 2022, the industrial building at 220-222 Chicago Street (corner Perry Street) in Buffalo, New York. Built about 1868, this two-story brick structure is a typical example of the era's industrial architecture, designed in a functional style with subtle Italianate influences principally in the form of a uniform fenestration scheme of segmentally-arched, stone-silled windows. The building was originally home to J. W. Ruger & Co., earlier known as the Queen City Iron Works, which had been founded about 1859 and earlier located three blocks south at the corner of Chicago and Miami Streets. By the time of its move to this larger facility, it had come to specialize in the manufacture of machinery used in the making of crackers and biscuits. The company maintained its operations in the building until its dissolution in 1923. Of even longer tenure was the building's second owner, the Deck Bros. company, which was the oldest existing brass foundry in Buffalo at the time of its closure in 2017. Owned today by Ellicott Development, it's been proposed for adaptive reuse for an as yet undisclosed purpose, and was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. |
