Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer Crowhurst to Bexhill Railway - geograph.org.uk - 1358802.jpg |
English: Former Crowhurst to Bexhill Railway The branch was opened in 1902 by the South Eastern Railway company in a bid to take passengers away from rival London, Brighton & South Coast Railway by offering a quicker route to residents of Bexhill to London. However, Bexhill stayed loyal to the LBSCR continuing to use there station due to its more convenient siting rather than the new SER one further to the west, with the result that the branch line soon became a white elephant. It survived until 1964 when it was axed by Beeching. Currently, the line seems to have become a footpath having been an all weather surface as well as a signpost to a supposed viewpoint if you follow this section though it ends abruptly at this point with little in the way of views during the summer. Originally this was the starting point of the 17 arch Crowhurst Viaduct which was demolished in 1969. How long it will stay as this will depend on current efforts to build a road that would by-pass Bexhill and Hastings which plans to use the former railway on this part of the route. Initial plans in 2001 were rejected by the government after a public inquiry but the plans have more or less been submitted again in 2008. |
