Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer Buffalo Traction Company (later International Railway Company) garage, Buffalo, New York - 20201104.jpg |
English: As seen in November 2020: the former International Railway Company garage at 175 Walden Avenue (corner Lathrop Street) in Buffalo, New York. Built in 1897 to a design by architect and engineer George A. Ricker, the architectural detail of the building is predominantly of the Romanesque Revival style - windows are topped consecutively with blind semicircular arches and decorative masonry work functioning as window heads, with decorative voussoirs at each side and in the keystone position, and a pair of roundel windows are found at either side of the gable - but the stepped parapet at the roofline facing Walden Avenue is more redolent of the Dutch Colonial style, which is rarely seen on industrial buildings such as this. The building first served as a streetcar barn for the Buffalo Traction Company and its successor, the International Railway Company, both predecessors to the modern-day Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. The east annex to the building (seen at left), containing a bus garage, was added in 1928, yet the IRC would occupy the building for only three more years after that. Subsequently, it passed through the hands of a number of industrial concerns - the Chicago-based Keeshin Motor Express Company (1935-c. 1944), the Henrich Plywood Company (through 1964), and most recently as a warehouse for the Sleep Number mattress company. |
