Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer Benedict House, Marine Hospital, UB Chronic Disease Institute - Buffalo, New York - 20200515.jpg |
English: Named a Buffalo city landmark in January 1992 and seen in this photo as of May 2020, the French Renaissance-style building at 2211 Main Street has quite a history: erected in 1910 from a design by architect James Knox Taylor, it first served as the United States Marine Hospital, a government-owned facility offering medical care to active military personnel, veterans, and merchant mariners and which eventually served as a training hospital for students at the University of Buffalo Medical School. In 1950, UB purchased the building outright and established there its Chronic Disease Institute, which was devoted to "physical medicine, the combination of medicine and therapy" and which "achieved remarkable results in restoring to partial or complete usefulness disabled limbs, muscles, and organs, and overcoming speech difficulties", especially for poliomyelitis patients. Finally, from 1997 through 2015, it was known as Benedict House, operated by Evergreen Health as a residential facility for the treatment of HIV/AIDS patients. It's currently undergoing renovation for use as a transitional apartment building for individuals recovering from substance abuse addiction. |
