, but slender inproportion to its height. The leaves are doubly pin-nate, two or three feet in length. It is a very beau-tiful tree, and is cultivated in the Atlantic States forornament. Its appearance in winter is i^eculiar, fromthe fewness of its branches and the large size of itsterminal shoots—which is, perhaps, the origin of itsFrench name, Chicot, Stump Tree. The wood of the Coffee Tree is of a rosy color; itis fine grained, compact, strong and durable. It isvery suitable for cabinet work, and is esteemed forbuilding. Its use, however, is very limited, onaccount of its scarcity in the greater part of thecountries where it is native. The timber, even ofyoung trees, contains a very small proportion of sapwood. It is of rapid growth, and its valuable prop-erties recommend it for forest culture in suitablesituations. A deep, rich soil is requisite to insure itsfull development.
