Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 20 May 2021 at 9:06 UTC, shows the burn scar and the fire fronts from an ongoing forest fire near Corinth, Greece. In the evening of 19 May, a violent forest fire broke out in Loutraki. Eighteen settlements were evacuated, as well as two monasteries. The fire destroyed power lines, causing widespread blackouts, and reached the coast, damaging several fishing boats. More than 250 firefighters and 17 airborne assets have been mobilised to extinguish the blaze, which was still active at the time this image was acquired. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission enables the deployment of applications for detecting and monitoring forest fires and mapping burnt areas with a spatial resolution of 10 metres.
