Summary

[edit]
Description

The fountain was presented to the town in 1880 by Dr G F Forbes. It protected the 'Clach na Cùdainn' or 'stone of the tubs' which stood in the centre of the street and was a resting place for servant girls when they made their trips to and from the river to collect water. www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_photograph.jsp?item_id=1785

A dull Thursday morning (Election Day) after several days of really nice sunny weather. The Ness Islands and banks of the River look really lovely and fresh.

Walking up the east bank from the Infirmary Bridge and War Memorial, one is provided with a nice footpath "Ladies Walk" which then opens up (opposite Bellfield Park) into a grassed area containing the Forbes Fountain which used to be sited outside the Town Hall till road widening required its relocation.

Just beyond, the Islands taper to a point where the "mill race" (boosted by the Aultnaskiach Burn) re-joins the River proper.

A short distance upstream there is a new "art noveau" footbridge on to the Islands proper.

The promenade from Inverness City Centre, up one side of the river, crossing through the wooded Islands and returning via the opposite bank has been a popular stroll since Victorian times when a series of footbridges were built to link the various islets.
