[edit]DescriptionFootpath alongside the disused Padarn Railway - geograph.org.uk - 684333.jpg |
English: Footpath alongside the disused Padarn Railway The Padarn Railway constructed in 1848 was, until the early 1960s, the means by which finished slate was conveyed from the Dinorwig Quarries to the port at Felinheli. The footpath ran alongside the railway track, but at a slightly lower level. Track and path were separated by a slate fence. The fine for trespassing on the line, as bilingual signs at every crossing point along the railway reminded one, was 40 shillings, a sum determined early in Victoria's reign and remained unchanged ever since. Dodging the one man railway police force, who would sometimes lay in wait behind a clump of trees, was a favourite pastime of more wayward local bucks, although to be caught could lead to the sins of the sons being visited upon the fathers in an area where the quarry was the sole source of male employment. |
