Português: Em 1623 mandou fazer a Câmara, em frente a rua dos Pelames, uma fonte que passou a chamar-se de Santiago. Esta fonte ficava de fronte para a Porta de Jacob ( Planta de 1593 e hoje conhecida porta do Colégio ou de Santiago).
Em 1745, por determinação do arcebispo D. José de Bragança, foi destruída fazendo-se então o chafariz que agora se encontra no centro do largo, depois de removida do primitivo local, onde tinha sido colocada em substituição da fonte. Encerrado num tanque quadrado o chafariz em forma de obelisco, assenta numa base quadrangular, com rebordos trabalhados. Segue-se a esta um motivo arquitectónico no qual se destacam quatro taças em forma de concha e aos cantos, quatro carrancas deviam despejar água pelas bocas. Sobrepujando este conjunto, um quadrilátero decorado com quatro cartelas nas quais quatro carrancas que também deviam lançar água pelos canos de cobre introduzidos nas bocas. A seguir principia o obelisco que sendo na base quadrado vai afunilando até chegar ao cimo onde uma esfera sustenta uma cruz arcebispal (dobrada). Dá uma certa elegância a este conjunto do chafariz o estar ao centro do tanque colocado sobre um lajedo de degraus que o fazem sobressair do piso da placa central do largo. A mudança do primitivo lugar à entrada da rua dos Pelames, deu-se em 1888, quando era presidente da Câmara o Conselheiro Lobato, tendo então os edis, resolvido aprovar o plano da transformação do largo, passando o chafariz para o centro, como o prova a acta da sessão de 30 de Janeiro do referido ano, tendo sido a despesa pela mudança ter ficado pela importância orçada em 220$000 mil reis, dando assim cumprimento ao deliberado na sessão de 16 do mesmo mês. |
