Summary

[edit]
Description This is where the courtyard gets its name. The giant pinecone (pigna) is an ancient Roman bronze work, cast in either the 1st or 2nd century. Originally a fountain that spouted water out of the top, it first stood near the Pantheon next to the Temple of Isis. It was moved to the courtyard of the old St. Peter's Basilica in medieval times, and finally in 1608 to its present location.
