Description
The smooth shaft, 145 cm high, is decorated at the bottom with a row of acanthus palmettes and at the top with two friezes with figures: the one that runs straight below the astragal shows four musicians, including three putti and a kind of pilgrim who must no doubt recall that the hospice Saint-Jacques, located in the rue de la Samaritaine, was nearby, and the Way of St. James passes by here, too; the other below the previous one, is formed by four satyrs holding tanners' tools.

Object history The group of figures and the column were created in 1559 in the workshop of Hans Gieng. Hans Schäuffelin protected the figures with colors, which no longer exist. The composite capital is younger, the sculptor Tschupphauer created it in 1763. In the same year, he also carried out some repairs to the group of figures. In 1927, the entire fountain was overhauled.
