Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Railway lines being laid. A steam engine is shunting carriages full of railway lines to the end of the line which is already laid. Teams of men are working at the end while some supervise the moving of the shipment. This photograph is thought to have been taken by Ernest Brooks.

The derogatory term for a German, 'Boche' or 'Bosch', derives from the French slang 'alboche', which combined 'allemand' (German) and 'caboche' (pate, head). Light railways like this were essential to the advancing army's success, providing a means of transport and communication.
[Original reads: 'Following up the Boche and actually laying a line on the ground just captured.']
