Catalogue Note
Theresa Benedicta of Bavaria (1725–1743) was the third child of Charles Albert (1697–1745), Elector of Bavaria and Holy Roman Emperor and Maria Amalia (1701–1756), Archduchess of Austria. Georges Desmarées' (1697–1776) portrait of the princess, a painting which is likely the prime version of this composition which descended in the collection of the Grafen von Holstein of Bavaria, was sold by Sotheby's Paris in 2004.1 Another version was sold as part of a pair, with a portrait of a boy in red identified as Prince Xavier of Saxony (1730–1806), at auction in 2004.2
