Summary
[edit]DescriptionFolded calc-silicate rocks (Gouverneur Marble, Mesoproterozoic, ~1.1 Ga; Route 11 roadcut southwest of Canton, New York State, USA) 11.jpg |
English: Folded silicate-rich marbles in the Precambrian of New York State, USA.
Marble is a crystalline-textured metamorphic rock composed of calcite (CaCO3 - calcium carbonate). It bubbles in acid and does not scratch glass. Marble forms by the metamorphism of limestone, a common biogenic sedimentary rock. The outcrop seen here is composed of highly impure banded marbles called "calc-silicate rocks", a truly horrid term that's even worse that the icky lithology terms "tufa" and "hornfels". (Wow.) The layers are highly convoluted from structural deformation. The rocks are part of the Gouverneur Marble of New York State's Adirondack Lowlands. The original limestones were metamorphosed at about 1.1 billion years ago, during the Grenville Orogeny. Stratigraphy: Gouverneur Marble, Oswegatchie Group, Mesoproterozoic, ~1.1 Ga metamorphic age Locality: The Snake Outcrop - roadcut on the northern side of Route 11, just northeast of the Route 11-O’Horo Road (= Old Rt. 11) intersection, ~4.2 miles southwest of the town of Canton, central Saint Lawrence County, Adirondack Lowlands, northern New York State, USA (44° 33’ 05.23” North latitude, 75° 13’ 29.57” West longitude) |
