| Description |
Introduced, warm-season, perennial (rarely annual), erect, many stemmed herb up to 2.5 m tall. Leaves are up to 50 cm long, deeply divided and feathery, producing a strong aniseed smell when bruised. Flowerheads are compond umbels up to 15 cm wide, with small yellow flowers. Flowering is from spring to summer. A native of Eurasia, it is a weed of roadsides, wasteland and other disturbed places; also a cultivated herb or vegetable. Generally not eaten by stock and can be problematic in native vegetation restoration projects. Small plants can be dug out – crown needs to be removed. Large plants can be treated using the cut-paint method; physical removal is less effective. Slashing can prevent seeding before removal of adult plants. A number of broadleaf herbicides are registered for use. After initial treatment, re-establishment of groundcover is critical. |
