Title
fob seal (profile)
Description
English: Cast gilt copper alloy fob seal matrix with glass intaglio still intact, inscribed with the letter 'J'. The matrix has a flat top which would originally had an attachment loop to link it to the fob chain. The sides of the matrix are open, exposing the glass piece inside, which is held by a claw setting at the tapered terminal, alternating with the four expanded arms which connect this end with the base that forms a border around the intaglio. The arms of the matrix are decorated with three vertical moulded ribs which have patches of gilding remaining on the surface. The glass is an amber colour and the style of the letter suggests that it is 18th to 19th century in date.

Bailey (2000) illustrates similar fob seal matrices, one with an incised glass intaglio, on page 31, Figs. 27 & 32, which are dated from the 18th century.

Read (1988) illustrates two similar openwork matrices with cornelian intaglios on page 191, Nos.1352-3, which are dated from the late 18th century to the 19th century.
