Description |
English: Flute, in A (flute d'amour), stained boxwood, five silver keys, with square covers stamped with crown, four ivory ferrules, six open holes, unusual lip rest (raised wings) beside embouchere, one ivory cap and stopper 1 flute d’amour in A Monzani, London, England, probably 1813 stained boxwood, ivory ferrules, five silver keys, overall length 737 mm stamped ‘(crown) - MONZANI - NO. 3 OLD BOND ST. - LONDON - 559’ 1998.60.306 Castle 457 The flute d’amour flute d’amore, like the oboe and clarinet d’amour was slightly larger, and deeper and sweeter sounding than its soprano counterpart. This instrument is a very fine example, made by Tebaldo Monzani (1762 - 1839) who worked in London during the first quarter of the 19th century. This flute has raised portions each side of the embouchure hole to aid in directing the breath correctly across the necessarily larger hole. In common with most Monzani flutes each key is stamped with a small crown, hinting at royal favour. |
