Description |
English: Flute, end blown, scrolled head 'Giorgi Patent', ebonite, keyless, eleven open holes, three nickel-silver ferrules 1 Giorgi flute designed by Carlo Tommaso Giorgi, Italy, circa 1888 and manufactured by Joseph Wallis and Son Ltd., London, England, circa 1900 ebonite, nickel-silver ferrules, overall length 528 mm stamped ‘JOSEPH WALLIS and SON LTD - GIORGI PATENT - LONDON’ 1998.60.185 Castle 285 The Florentine, Carlo Tommaso Giorgi, invented the Giorgi flute around 1888. It was designed as a chromatic instrument, with eleven correctly placed holes to produce the twelve semi-tones of the octave. To close this number of holes it required both thumbs, all finger tips, and the side of one finger. The instrument was held vertically instead of horizontally. Because of the different fingering, the system was doomed to failure almost from the start, because of the difficulty for the players to change, and their reluctance to teach the instrument. Giorgi flutes were made from ebonite a hard vulcanized rubber that was stronger than wood for making instruments subject to the extremes of temperature and humidity experienced in military bands. |
