Text Appearing After Image: New Flushing High School F. Harrison, Nelson J. Gates and Sherman Williams. Flushing had thedistinction of being the first school district in the State to abolish tuitionfees, and make its common schools free. It was also a pioneer in thefield of High School education. The Flushing High School was estab-lished by act of the Legislature in 1875 and preceded by a period of18 years the recognition as a High School of any similar institution inthe city, by the Regents of the University of the State of New York.Following Flushing, the next high school in the present city to beofficially recognized by the Regents was the Jamaica High School in1893. Flushings first Board of Education, authorized by a special actof the Legislature in 1848 and named in the bill, consisted of EffinghamH. Lawrence, Edward E. Mitchell, Samuel B.
