Summary
[edit]DescriptionFluorite-barite on fossiliferous dolostone (Columbus Limestone, Middle Devonian; Ottawa County, Ohio, USA) 2.jpg |
English: Fossiliferous dolostone with encrusting fluorite and barite from the Devonian of Ohio, USA.
This interesting specimen principally consists of grayish-colored rock, which is fossiliferous dolostone. Dolostone is a crystalline-textured chemical sedimentary rock composed of the mineral dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO3)2). Most dolostone forms by chemical alteration of limestone. The whitish and purplish material is mineralization that grew on the external mold of a fossil rugose coral in the dolostone. The whitish areas are the mineral barite (barium sulfate, BaSO4). The purplish areas are the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF2). Stratigraphy: Columbus Limestone, Eifelian Stage, lower Middle Devonian Locality: undisclosed site in Ottawa County (likely a quarry), northern Ohio, USA |
