July 2G, 1917. 1 he rlorists Kcview 55 BURPEE'S SWEET PEAS NEW EARLY OR WINTER-FLOWERINQ SPENCERS With a keen appreciation of the splendid future of the Sweet Pea, and particularly of New Early Winter-flowering or Long Season Spencers, we began crossing the Spencer-flowering Sweet Peas with the Early or Win- ter-flowering Grandiflora as far back as the summer of 1909. Later we have been using that magnificent Australian variety, "Yarrawa," to a great extent in our crosses. We now otter with the greatest confidence the splendid Novelties listed below. These are all true, ihoroughly fixed in type and are a «reat improvement on our various colors. From Eowirg made under glass in August ihey may be flowered in time for Thanksgiving. September sowing will produce the finest of flowers by Christmas. If grown in the open they flower Feveral weeks ahead of the Standard or Summer-flowering Spencers, and with proper treat- ->, ment continue to bloom quite as long as that lype. Nine of these varieties were awarded nineteen Certificates of Merit by the following: Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Philadelphia. American Sweet Pea Society, San ii'rancisco. The International Show, New York. Burpee's Early Enchantress ^?^,;,enle'^'n size, measuring two and one-half inches in diame- ter; they are exquisitely waved or frilled, well placed on stiff stems and usually produced in threes or fours. The color is most attractive and pleasing. It is a bright rose-pink, becoming deep- er toward the edges of standard and wings, grad- ually softening in tone toward the center of the flower. *fl oz,, 75 cts,; oz., $1.25; lb., $12.50.
