The members of the Florists' Club, their ladies and friends, to the num- ber of more than 300, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Gude at a garden party on the lawn at their home, 3800 New Hampshire avenue, northwest, Jujy 7. The guests in- cluded members of the congressional committee through whom it is hoped td secure an appropriation for the Smith memorial, many public men and a party of fifteen Baltimore florists. The grounds were attractively deco- rated w.ith colored electric lights and a (grotesquely painted illuminated moon sllowed just above a clump of small t^es, giving a bright moonlight effect. :Music was furnished by Sam Shreve's Elallipolis Grotto Band. Richard Vin- cent, Jr., of White Marsh, Md., former president of the S. A. F., was intro- dticed by Mr. Gude as being the man who has made three blades of grass grow where only one grew before. After replying to the ovation accorded him by the guests, Mr. Vincent paid a glowing tribute to the late William R. Smith and delivered a lecture on "A Trip Through Scotland, the Land of Burns. His remarks were illustrated by a large number of finely executed lantern sHdes. While some of these were being shown, Scotch songs were softly ren- dered by a Victrola. These particu- larly pleased President Cooke and he allowed his melodious -voice to mingle with that from the machine, much to the amusement of his audience. Following the lecture a varied pro- gram of entertainment was rendered by the Florists' Glee Club, and a num- ber of members amused the guests with songs and recitations. The children particularly enjoyed them- selves, for there was plenty of room for them to play their games. The eve- ning for the adults ended with dancing in the parlors of the house and a reception to several of the members of the Columbia Players. Various Notes. Two horses owned by J. R.
