14 The Florists' Review August 30, 1917. Geddis. E. G. Hill finally afforded the idea that disposed of the matter by moving that Miss Jarvis be referred to the publicity committee, who can em- ploy her if her services appear to have value. Committee on President's Address. The committee, consisting of H. P. Knoble, Patrick Welch, George Asmus, C. E. Critchell and Joseph Heacock, to whom the president's address was re- ferred, recommended concurrence in his recommendations. The committee also recommended that the secretary prepare instructions for the state vice-presi- dents, with a view to increasing their usefulness; that the society give serious consideration to the matter of holding the national flower show annually, in connection with the convention, in the spring; that the tariff and legislation committee maintain increasing vigilance to defend the trade from injury; that the members of the society send the publicity committee all articles in local papers discouraging the use of flowers, to the end that publication of counter articles be secured; that every firm and individual in the trade be urged to con- tribute something to the funds for pub- licity; that a committee of three be appointed to raise a fund for patriotic duty. Judges on Trades' Display. i' The judges of the trades' display were A. Gude, John Canning, W. H. Sie- brecht, A. Kottmiller, H. P. Knoble, W. C. Gloeckner, E. A. Peirce, Henry Weston and W. G. Badgley. Secretary Young read their report. Honorable mention was recommended for the ex- hibits of Schloss Bros., M. Rice Co., Hitchings & Co., Mead-Suydam Co., C' J. Kraus, Wertheimer Bros., H. Bayers- dorfer & Co., F. R. Pierson Co., John Scheepers & Co., Henry A. Dreer, Inc., Fred Dressel, General Rubber Co., Lager & Hurrell, Robert Craig Co., C. E. Falls, the Expanded Wood Co., Vaughan 's Seed Store, S. S. Pennock Co., H. F. Michell Co., Basket Novelty Co., and the American Greenhouse Mfg. Co. High commendation was recommended for the exhibits of the A. L. Randall Co., Reed & Keller, Bobbink & Atkins, Chicago Feed & Fertilizer Co., John Lewis Childs, J. H. Fiesser, Joseph Heacock Co., Heatherhome Co., Mirror Mfg. Co., J. G. Neidinger Co., Nitrate Agencies Co., J. A. Peterson & Sons, A. N. Pierson, Inc., Julius Roehrs Co., B. Rosens, Russin & Hanfling and others. The report was adopted. Judges on the Garden. The judges of the Convention Garden were Arthur Herrington, R. A. Vincent and J. H. Pepper. For them the latter recommended certificates of merit be awarded to Isaac Hicks & Son, for col- lection of evergreens; to B. Hammond Tracy, for gladioli; to Conard & Jones Co., for Cannas Snow Queen and New York; to Henry A. Dreer, Inc., for Canna Orange Bedder, and to Wm. Tricker, for pool of aquatics. Honor- able mention was recommended for Vaughan's Seed Store, for Gladiolus Frank Pendleton and Canna Yellow King Humbert; to John Lewis Childs, for collection of gladioli; to Henry A. Dreer, Inc., for Canna Scharfenstein; to Thomas Meehan & Sons, for hibis- cus; to A. L. Miller, for flower beds. The Election. The new method of conducting the election, with four sets of judges work- ing at once, each set handling a fourth of the letters of the alphabet, was used for the first time and proved a splendid feature. It obviated the necessity of standing in line to vote, made it pos- sible to poll the entire vote in a short time, in comfort, and to announce the result promptly. The only contest was for the presi- dency. The count showed: C. H. Totty, Madison, N. J., 198; A. L. Miller, Jamai- ca, N. Y., 122. The other officers were elected unan- imously, as follows:

Directors for three years, Joseph Manda, South Orange, N. J.; C. E. Critchell, Cincinnati, O. After President Kerr had made the announcement the defeated candidate made a neat speech of congratulation and moved that the election be made unanimous, to which Mr. Totty replietl with a few words of thanks and appre- ciation. Miscellaneous Matters. A motion to express approval of the action of President Wilson in ordering the reduction of coal to certain fixed prices provoked a lively debate, which resulted in the decision that it is inad- visable to Call attention at this time to the fuel needs of the trade. On motion of W. F. Therkildson tele- grams were ordered sent to the manag- ers of the war revenue bill now under consideration at Washington, objecting to the proposed mailing tax of 1 cent each on catalogues weighing over four ounces. Chairman Theodore Wirth, of the committee on convention garden, sent a report regretting that this year's gar- den is a disappointment in spite of much hard work by all concerned, but predicting better results at the next one, in 1919, urging earnest endeavor to that end. J. F. Ammann, A. F. Poeljl^aun and A. A. Niessen drafted suitable final resolutions, expressing the usual appre- ciation of courtesies. John Westcott, of Philadelphia, who speaks in a most happy vein, presented to President and Mrs. Kerr a handsome chest of silver as a memento of the oc- casion. It was the last act of the con- vention. More of Those Present Among those from outside the New York metropolitan district whose pres- ence was noted after last week's list had gone to press were: B.
