Partial View of the Nurseries. THE UNIVERSAL HORTICULTURAL ESTABLISHMENT, SOUTH ORANGE, N. J. THE UNIVERSAL HORTICULTUR- AL ESTABLISHMENT, SOUTH ORANGE, N. J. This uni(HH' extensive and ever growing estal)lishnient is jnst what its name iniplit'S. tor liere you will find the whole I'niverse I'epresented with the l)est it produces in everything con- nected with horticulture. Only a short, pleasant ride on trolley or train from the Jersey ferries and we I'each the Oranges, which is justly acknowledged to ho the most pictur- esque and healthiest section of coun- try near to the great city of New York. Here in the midst of finest residences, and within a stone's throw of the South Orange railroad depot. Mr. W. A. .Manda's gi'eat nurseries stretch out at the foot of the famous Orange Mountains, and this home of all tljat is l)rig)itost and sweetest in plants and fiowei's has become a gathering i)lace for buyers, connoisseurs and the fiow(M- loving pul)lic. It is unnecessary to mention Mr. Manda's experience and ability to the trade, it was known long before he gatheied and grew the largest and fin- est Ian- da. at Short Hills, a few stations above his present place. Six years ago he i)urchased some of the land he now general plan and grouping of li-ees. shrubs and fiowers, and unlike tlie ordinary method of cultivation as piacticed in nurseries, hf>re whilst the different and numerous species of plants are kept separate they are so arranged as to sho# their specific and iiulividual beauty and worth, and yet all go to enhance the general plan. It is not a mere manufactory of plants, on all sides there are object lessons in i)lanting and adai)tability. The grounds contain a i()ni))lete col- lection of hei'baceous i)lants: all the best known varieties and ver.v many worthy kinds not commonly seen are grown in great numbers to supply the increasing demand for this class of I)lants. A great many new things are being tested and <'xperimente(l with on the always interesting trial grounds, .\mongst these we migl;t mention a n<nv variegatetl leaved sun- flower; it is of stately habit and will be a great acquisition to sul)-troi)ical bedding plants. There is also a batch of hybrid mo- luinla. varying in color from a pale mau\e to (lee() i)uri)le: a new golden yellow Iris aurea: a collection of '.0 varieties of in-west and choicest .Tap- anese iiis; Phlox "Tom Thumb, " the best and dwarfest of all this class of I)hlox in cultivation: Iberis seniper- virens superba, which is a grand Im- l)rovement on the old type, the tlower being double the size, good substanco and the purest white: this will be of the utmost value and importance to llorists doing a local trade. There are a number of other fine new hardy flowers which are being jirepared for dissemination next season. The ma- jority of all the favorite herbaceoti.i flowers are grown here by tiie thoti • sands to sii;)i)ly the growing fad for old fashioned gardens and geneial landscape work. , Special interest is also given here to conifers, which are represented by \(iver three hundred species and varie- ties, many magnificent pyramids of everlasting gold and green are in this sphMidid collection of coniferous shrubs; \arieties sik li as Cup!'""^^"^ Lawsoniana and Tliuyopsis l)oreali.-,
