Description
English: GARMSIR DISTRICT, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Steven Dorman sanitizes a burn on the arm of a local child here, May 15. The native of Miami Gardens, Fla., is the senior line corpsman for Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. Dorman, who is always on call, responded to this incident outside his normal working hours. In addition to treating locals and 1/3 Marines, he maintains accountability of all the corpsman in the company. Dorman said the local community has limited medical resources and expertise. "They don't know how to treat certain injuries," said Dorman, "so I am happy to show them. We're here not to fight, but to help the people out. And being able to make their life better, even if it's by a little bit, is worth every effort." The battalion supports Regimental Combat Team 1, the Marine ground combat element in Southern Helmand province. The mission of the RCT is to partner with Afghanistan to conduct counterinsurgency operations to secure the Afghan people, defeat insurgent forces, and enable Afghanistan to assume security responsibilities in the region. Ultimately, the partnered forces promote the expansion of stability, development and legitimate governance.
