e miles west of Bartow are situated the landsof the Bone Valley Phosphate Company, through which runsa small creek, a tributary of the north fork of the AlafiaRiver. This creek has meandered to an extent which issurprising, and though the channel is only about three feetwide, the whole bed is about 100 yards across. This area isunderlaid with largish pebbles mixed in sand, constitutingin reality a drift deposit, and will be mined bv a centrifugalpump from a barge, the stream being dammed up to holdthe water. The deposits underlying the land will be excavatedby a dredge at a future date, when the bed of the creek hasbeen exhausted. Two miles north of Fort Meade, on Hendry Branch, theVirginia-Florida Phosphate Company owns about 300 acres ofland, which slopes sharply on both sides down to the stream. The present digging, which is done by hand, is being carried onnear the bed of the creek, where there is a bed of drift phosphatein sand about three feet thick. The works are situated on the

The water forwashing is pumped from a well sunk to a depth of about 250 feetThe drying is done by a brick chimney. It is under contempla-tion to mine by dredge or land excavator. About 1,500 tonswere shipped last year, the result of some 100 days work, extensive alterations in the plant having consumed much time. At Fort Meade a company is mining pebble embedded ina hard white rock, which is broken up by crusher. The pebblesare then screened from the sand and matrix. Iron and aluminaruns between 6 and 7 per cent. Several other undertakings have been organised, and aregetting in their plant, but the work is not forward enough toenable any description to be made. There is a very fine deposit of pebble on Little PainsCreek, overlaid with a white rock capping well mixed withpebbles, but no operations have been started in this neighbour-hood.
