Description
English: Portrait painting of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910); a British nurse, statistician, and social reformer who was considered as the foundational thinker of modern nursing. Nightingale was put in charge of nursing British, French and Turkish soldiers in the Crimean War (1853 – 1856) where Britain and France entered the war against Russia on the side of the Ottoman Empire. In 1854, she and the staff of about 40 women volunteer nurses were sent to the Ottoman Empire.

They spent many hours in the wards at the military hospital on the Asiatic side of the Bosporus, opposite Constantinople, at Scutari (modern-day Üsküdar in Istanbul). Her night rounds giving personal care to the wounded established her image as the “Lady with the Lamp”. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was a legend in her own lifetime and one of the most famous women in British history. Her work set the standards for modern nursing. For the rest of her life, she continued to campaign for improved sanitary conditions in both military and civilian hospitals.

İstanbul Boğazı'nın Asya yakasında, Konstantinopolis'in karşısında, Scutari’deki (günümüzde İstanbul'da Üsküdar) askeri hastanenin koğuşlarında uzun saatler geçirdiler. Florence Nightingale’in yaralılara ve hastalara bakım verdigi gece turları, onun icin "Lambalı Kadın" imajını oluşturdu.
